Emotional Support Animal (ESA) Assessment
An ESA assessment by a licensed mental health professional determines if an animal's companionship can help ease a mental or emotional condition.
Psychiatric Service Dog (PSD) assessment evaluates if a dog is trained to perform specific tasks to reduce disabling effects.
Both provide support and housing protections under the Fair Housing Act (FHA). Still, a PSD also has public access rights under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), requiring a special letter.
ESA Assessment
Purpose: To provide comfort and therapeutic benefit through companionship.
Assessment: A licensed mental health professional (LMHP) assesses if the person has a condition benefiting from an ESA.
Training: No specialized training needed.
Rights: ESAs mainly have housing rights under FHA, allowing living without pet restrictions or fees. They don't automatically have public access.
PSD Assessment
Purpose: To perform specific tasks assisting with a psychiatric disability, like alerting to panic attacks.
Assessment: Evaluates the dog's training and ability to perform tasks, confirmed by an LMHP.
Training: The dog must be trained for specific tasks.
Rights: Besides housing rights, a PSD has public access rights under ADA, allowing it in most public places.
